Solo 4WD Adventure: Conquering The Powerlines Parallel Track in Mundaring State Forest

On Saturday, September 7th, 2024, I embarked on a solo off-roading adventure in the Mundaring State Forest, tackling the challenging track that runs alongside the iconic powerlines. While the weather was clear, recent rains had left parts of the trail wet and slippery, adding an extra layer of excitement to the experience. Armed with my trusty Toyota FJ Cruiser, I set off to explore this less-travelled path, eager to put my 4WD skills to the test.

The Track: A Mix of Challenges and Thrills

The trailhead starts from Flynn Rd, winding its way parallel to the well-known Mundaring Powerlines track for a few kilometres. While the difficulty can vary depending on the chosen line, expect a moderate to high level of challenge. The uphill sections can be quite steep and may benefit from engaging your diff lock or traction control, though careful line selection can often get you through without these aids.

Be prepared for some deep holes and intimidating inclines along the way. The track's surface can get quite slippery after rain, so good Mud Terrain (MT) or at least All Terrain (AT) tyres are highly recommended. Road tires are a definite no-no!

Vehicle Preparation and Considerations

As I was tackling this trail solo, it was crucial to have my FJ Cruiser well-prepared. With its capable 4WD system and generous ground clearance, it's well-suited for this type of terrain. However, some modifications can enhance its performance and protection.

  • Tyres: My FJ was equipped with 32.7-inch MT - mud tyres (285 70 17), providing adequate traction and clearance for most obstacles. Tyre pressure was lowered to 22 psi.
  • Rock Sliders and Side Steps: These offer crucial side protection for your vehicle's sills. However, if you have low-hanging side steps, be mindful of potential clearance issues, and consider removing them if necessary. Thin, hollow side steps can even bend or get damaged on rocks or obstacles.

Key Waypoints and Coordinates:

Note: This track is currently off the beaten path and sees very little traffic. I'd advise against tackling it alone, especially if you're not an experienced off-roader or comfortable being solo in the forest – it can get a bit spooky alone out there!

The Adventure Unfolds

The initial part of the track was relatively smooth. However, the terrain soon became more challenging, with a series of steep climbs and rocky sections. The recent rains had created some muddy patches, making it even more important to choose my lines carefully.

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the hill climbs. The combination of loose rocks, slippery mud, and steep inclines put my FJ's capabilities to the test. There were a few moments where I thought I might need to winch myself out, but with a bit of perseverance and some skilful manoeuvring, I managed to conquer each obstacle.

The Verdict

Overall, the short Powerlines Parallel track in Mundaring State Forest is a fantastic option for those seeking a moderate off-road adventure near Perth. The scenery is beautiful, the challenges are rewarding, and the sense of accomplishment at the end of the day is unbeatable.
